Though the name Taro typically refers to any one tuber specie in the Araceae family, the Colocasia esculenta is by far the most widely cultivated. Native to southeast Asia, the perennial tropical plant is grown for its edible starchy rhizomes, and is regarded a staple in African, Oceanic and Asian cultures. Its sweet, pleasant taste makes it an ideal filling for pies, or to pair with meats in roasts, grills, purees or broths, or in a milky dessert.
