Also known as the pumpkin cherry in Hawaii, this berry is favoured among chefs as part of the 12 Trees Project due to its incredible culinary versatility, vibrant colour and uncanny flavor. As a member of the Myrataceae family, the plant’s relatives include the guava, jaboticaba and mountain apple.
A good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and iodine, the Surinam cherry is considered anti-diarrhoeic. Surinam cherry is also known to contain substantial amounts of various antioxidants.
However, the seeds are reported to be toxic to some people and should be avoided.
