Prickly Pears

Despite its prickly exterior, the fruit of the prickly pear is edible once its spines have been carefully removed. Native Americans have been known to roll the fruit around grit to “sand” the spines off. Alternatively, the fruits can be roasted over a flame to remove the spines, though there are spineless cultivations available today. Prickly pears are often made into candies, jelly and a wide range of beverages.
