Peppermint is a hybrid mint, crossing watermint and spearmint varietals. It is a perenniel herb that grows to approximately a metre high, and is indigenous to Europe. The plant has smooth stems and leaves measuring from 4–9 centimetres wide, dark green in colour and slightly hairy with reddish veins and coarsely toothed edges. It blooms in the summer with tiny purple flowers forming from blunt spikes. It has a high menthol content with a warm, spicy scent and cool, tingling aftertaste which makes it ideal for use in flavouring and cosmetic products.
