A member of the Euphorbiaceae family, the Mongongo tree can grow up to 20m in height. Often found on forested hills and sand banks, the Mongongo is especially popular in African cuisine and have been described by some as a staple. The nuts store well and can be kept for a year, and still remain edible. Mongongo oil extracts have been used as a moisturizing body rub in wintery climates.
