Japanese Pepper

(Japanese: 山椒 sanshō) A deciduous, fragrant prickly shrub from the Rutaceae family, the Japanese Prickly Ash is cultivated from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and southern parts of the Korean peninsula. A commercially important plant, the Japanese Pepper got its moniker from its famously crushed peppercorns, and is used as a standard spice. The pepper is one of seven signature ingredients of shichimi.
