Dorrigo Pepper or Native Pepper is a rainforest shrub of temperate forests of Tasmania. They have characteristic deep red stems and branches, with narrow, ellipetical leaves measuring approximately 10 centimetres in length. Small yellow to creamcolored flowers are followed by shiny, deep-purple to black, plump fruits about 5 millimetres in diameter and containing a cluster of tiny black seeds inside. The berries are dark bluey-black in colour and have a 5 – 8mm diameter knobbly round shape, with a ridge around the centre. The fruit, leaves and flowers are all edible with a distinct flavor, an intense pungence and ensuing numb sensation likened to Sichuan pepper. It is rarely available outside of Australia and utilized in bush cuisine alongside other native herbs and spices of Australia.
