Bergamot, also known as bee balm, is a member of the mint family. This aromatic herbaceous perennial is native to North America woodlands, with branched, hairy stems and opposite oval, pointy dark green leaves that are slightly toothed with a red vein. Bergamot has square stems with gray-green foliage, with dark pink, red or purple flowers that bloom from Summer to early Autumn. It has a distinctive citrus aroma, with an added warm, spicy note. It has a savory, rich floral flavor with a bitter or astringent edge,and is also often used as a scent or for its medicinal value.
