Strictly tropical, Abiu thrives best in a year-round warm and moist climate. In Brazil, Abiu pulp is eaten to relieve coughs, bronchitis and other pulmonary complaints. The latex is given as a anthelmintic and is applied on abscesses. Until fully ripe, the fruit is permeated with latex and is very gummy and astringent. Texture of pulp is creamy and jelly-like and has a saccharine flavor.
